5 Ways You Can Look and Feel Happier and Healthier

by Diane Harrison

Much of how you experience life is based on your overall wellness and how you nurture it. If you look and feel your best, you'll likely have a better outlook on life. With these simple tips, you can start working toward a happier, healthier life.

1. Change Up Your Exercise Routine

Exercise doesn't have to be a tedious task you don't enjoy. In fact, exercise without some enjoyment is not sustainable. Research shows that changing up your daily exercise routine regularly is better for your health and easier to maintain. If you enjoy the gym, you can do more to make it exciting than just switching target muscles. Be spontaneous and check out the classes available when you're feeling uninspired. If you're not a gym person, take your workouts outdoors or do some in-home exercises. The key is to find a way to be active every day.

2. Make Your Home a Place of Refuge

The environment you live in can have a profound effect on your mental and emotional state. You should be able to walk in and feel relaxed and stress-free, but clutter and disorganization can be a hindrance. If you need help getting your home in order, start by decluttering and getting everything clean. If the process seems overwhelming, begin with one room and work your way through it, organizing closets and removing things you no longer need. Create a zen space where you can meditate in the mornings or whenever you're feeling stressed or unmotivated.

3. Make Time for Self-Care

Practicing self-care should always be a priority. It can be a simple practice, such as making time for a relaxing bath or watching a movie you've been wanting to see. Use your breaks at work to take a quick nap to give you more energy and focus for the rest of the day. Go for a walk to clear your head in the afternoon. Take up journaling to express yourself or find a hobby that makes you happy. Seeing a doctor is self-care as well. Get a check-up when you can to stay on top of your medical health.

4. Spend Time With Your Loved Ones

Make plans with the people you love. Quality time is good for the soul, and humans need socialization. Sometimes the grind from work can keep you away from family and friends for longer than you intended. Nurture those relationships by making them a weekly priority. It can be a short coffee encounter in the morning with a friend or a movie night with the family. You can find little ways to incorporate quality time into every day.

5. Go on a Weekend Getaway

When the stress of your daily grind gets overwhelming, escape it all. Go on a solo weekend trip or round up a few of your best friends to get away. You can go somewhere you love or try something new and exciting. Spend that time recharging so you can get back to life with new energy.

As you embark on your health and wellness journey, you'll have moments when you feel as though you can't keep up. You may veer off-track and fall behind on your routine. Stay positive and flexible. The harder you are on yourself, the more difficult it may be to get back up.
