Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Aristotle Economou.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Economou. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.

Nothing takes the place of personal experience. This is why as a doctor I understand the difficulties my patients face when dealing with a personal health challenge.

Anti-Aging… Some Age Faster Than Others.

12/17/2017

Happy Holidays!

The first step to slow the aging process is to clean up the accumulated “toxic stuff” sitting in our bodies for the past 12 months or more!

Yes, I know you have your favorite anti-aging products but remember healing the skin is from the outside-in and inside-out!

Picture
Unfortunately the toxins accelerate aging by increasing the oxidation (think rusting patio furniture) and inflammation.  The result:  stiff and painful joints, fatigue and low energy levels, difficult weight loss and aging skin!  Some of us age faster than others and it shows….. in part due to the amount of toxins store in our bodies.

There’s no better way for you to start an anti-aging program than detoxifying.  At the end of this blog, I’ll share a new at home detox program that I love and that’s amazing for detoxing.  Our patients are reporting stellar results.

There are two primary causes for disease and accelerated aging:

(1) nutrient levels go down
(2) toxicity levels go up.

Let's Talk Arsenic.
It’s Not Just in Rice

Arsenic contamination of ground and drinking water has become an almost silent global health catastrophe.  It leads to liver cirrhosis, NASH (fatty liver, the #1 liver disease now), diabetes, kidney damage, heart attacks, as well as cancers of the skin, liver, bladder, kidney, and lung.

But levels are high in those who eat a lot of chicken, since arsenic is a common insecticide powder used to kill body lice on fowl raised in close quarters.

Aside from the recent discovery that arsenic can be a contaminant in rice, we rarely hear about it.  That’s in part because it’s but one of thousands of unavoidable nasty environmental chemicals that erode our health.  But worse, we don’t hear about it because there is no easy solution for it.

So arsenic continues to be one of the myriad of unavoidable chemicals that drive our epidemic of chronic diseases.  Yet like any chemical, it has multiple ways of damaging our genetics, energy producing mitochondria, and cell membranes needed for producing healing and anti-aging.

Since arsenic is also a heavy metal, it does even more damage. For it can kick minerals out of enzymes and then bring the activity of those enzymes to a screeching halt.

Fortunately, there are many ways to combat the dangers of this heavy metal and other toxins. Examples range from basic foods like  pomegranate juice, green beans, brassica every day such as cabbage, arugula, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, radishes, collard greens and cauliflower!

The goal is to make sure every day you have phyto-nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, and whole foods to balance out the destruction of ubiquitous yet unavoidable environmental toxins.

In the meantime, here are my new favorite anti-aging 2-month detox kits and cleanse:
  1. Black Box Liver Detox Program Phase 1 and
  2. Black Box 2 Detox Program Phase 2

This way you can get rid of even more stored disease-promoting chemicals especially as a new year cleanse, including heavy metals like arsenic.

Health is merely a question of getting enough support to enable you to restore nutrient levels, lower toxin levels and start slowing the aging process in the new year!

Does Stress During Pregnancy Affect Size of Baby?

12/2/2017

A new study reveals prenatal stress has a physical effect on babies. Researchers report prenatal maternal stress in late gestation leads to slower growth of the offspring both in utero and during infancy.

Researchers from The Universities of New Mexico and Göttingen have now proposed a hypothesis that largely predicts why there are highly variable patterns in the growth rates of disadvantaged offspring across 719 studies on 21 mammal species.
Picture
“The idea is that prenatal stress affects offspring in two different ways depending on the timing of the stressor during pregnancy—yielding different outcomes before birth, after birth, and after weaning” says Andreas Berghänel, evolutionary anthropologist at The University of New Mexico and lead author of the study.

For example, prenatal maternal stress late in gestation causes mothers to invest less energy in their offspring, which leads to slower grow in the womb and during infancy. Once the baby has reached nutritional independence, however, they are no longer affected directly by their mother’s provisioning, and consequently grow at the same rate as non-disadvantaged offspring. Thus, maternal stress late in gestation leads to slow growth during dependent phases, but doesn’t affect growth later.

By contrast, prenatal maternal stress early in gestation can cause the fetus to be entirely reprogrammed to deal with a reduced life expectancy. To “make the best of a bad job,” the early challenged offspring switches to an accelerated pace of life and grows and matures faster than unchallenged offspring to ensure that it reproduces before it dies. Once set on the fast track, the offspring under early prenatal maternal stress remain on this trajectory even after weaning and therefore overshoot the usual body size for age throughout development.

“We found that stress during late gestation reduces offspring growth during dependence, resulting in a reduced body size throughout development, whereas stress during early gestation results in largely unaffected growth rates during dependence but accelerated growth and increased size after weaning,” says Berghänel.

Dr. Aristotle's Comment:

3 Examples of Stress Relief During Pregnancy

1.
Restoring Pelvic Balance and Poor Posture

Pregnant women often have issues with their pelvic balance and back pain due to the extra weight they must carry in the front of their body. Many women experience pelvic structural changes during their pregnancy. When the pelvis is not in balance, it can restrict the amount of room that the developing baby has. We address imbalances of the spine to lessen low back pain.

2. Reducing Pregnancy Symptoms

Care helps reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy. Regular care throughout pregnancy can help women maintain their health during pregnancy, relieve joint and neck pain and control the symptoms of nausea.

3. Reducing Labor and Delivery Time

Since women who receive regular care are taking care of their nervous system, many have found their bodies are better prepared to handle the childbirth process. When the nervous system is working properly, the whole body is working as it should be. With this in mind, many women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy have shorter labor and delivery times.

The body undergoes a number of changes during pregnancy. This can leave any woman feeling uncomfortable as her body handles the physical and hormonal changes that pregnancy brings. Of course, many women are also worried about the health and safety of their baby during this important developmental time. In order to take the best care possible of both mom and baby, it is important to take care of your body with regular visits.

Pregnant moms who take the time to keep their body in balance during pregnancy will find that their overall pregnancy can be more comfortable and enjoyable as they keep their bodies — and their babies — healthy.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): New Research

11/14/2017

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with irregular menstrual periods, infertility, obesity, diabetes, excess hair growth, acne, and other hormonal difficulties. Research shows that women with PCOS have an increased susceptibility to elevated insulin levels.

In a new study published six days ago in Cell Journal, researchers demonstrated that oral quercetin supplementation improves the metabolic features of PCOS patients by upregulating adiponectin and Amp-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Adiponectin signaling regulates fatty acid metabolism and glucose by activation of AMPK.
Picture
Pharmaceutical interventions provide some improvements but they do not correct many of the underlying factors and have side effects that may not be tolerated by patients. In addition, many PCOS patients are overweight and have dietary habits that exacerbate the condition.

This randomized clinical trial consisted of 84 patients with PCOS. They were randomly assigned to two groups. One group received 500 mg quercetin twice daily for 12 weeks and other group received a placebo. As a result, researchers demonstrated that oral quercetin supplementation significantly increased the expression of adiponectin receptors and AMPK. Quercetin supplementation enhanced AMPK level by 12.3% compared with the placebo group.

Other Nutrients to Consider to Support PCOS
Studies have shown that an inositol deficiency is common in women with PCOS. A distinctive characteristic feature of PCOS is a reduced ability to process, metabolize, and effectively use inositol from foods. As a result, the nutritional requirements of PCOS patients may not be met by a simple change in the diet and, thus, inositol should be viewed as a conditionally essential nutrient in these women.

Myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol are both essential forms of inositol for patients with PCOS. The conversion of myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol is of interest because errors here have been strongly involved in PCOS patients.

Strong evidence supports that the body makes D-chiro-inositol from myo-inositol and more evidence suggests that some people are less able to make this conversion than others. Along this spectrum, people who are completely unable to convert myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol are only going to benefit from supplementation with D-chiro-inositol.

Other people who make the conversion, but with less than optimal efficiency, may benefit from large doses of myo-inositol. And, other individuals in between, might see the best results from a blend of the two. Since this conversion is impaired in individuals with PCOS, it is important to always include D-chiro-inositol with myo-inositol supplementation. D-chiro-inositol is the more potent form of inositol for supporting insulin resistance, however, myo-inositol is need for oocyte quality and maturation.

Therefore, supplementing with D-chiro-inositol alone cannot not fulfill myo-inositol’s roles that are specific and different from D-chiro-inositol, since it does not convert to myo-inositol.

Essential fatty acids are another consideration in PCOS. EFAs should be consumed in our diets for overall health, but most individuals with insulin resistance are deficient. Fish oils help to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation.

Overcoming Morning Sickness

10/28/2017

It is rare if a pregnant woman does not encounter a certain amount of "morning sickness" throughout the term.

As any one who has ever experienced pregnancy can confirm, morning sickness leaves an expectant mother miserable for days, weeks or months, turning an otherwise joyful time into a period of misery.
Picture

Thankfully there is an integrative approach, when properly used, which produces a remarkable response.

It has been my personal clinical observation, that this system carries with it a success rate as high as 90 percent overall.  You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by applying this method.

To get you started, begin by using these 3 acu-points with firm pressure for 30 seconds per area:

P 5 -- Jian Shi -- Intermediary -- four fingers above the palmar wrist crease.
P 6 -- Nei Guan -- Inner Gate -- three fingers above the palmar wrist crease.
LIV 3 -- Tai Chong -- Bigger Rushing -- between the large toe and second toe.

If your morning sickness is deep rooted and you still need additional assistance, let us know.

Pregnant Moms and Lower IQ In  Children

8/5/2017

Children whose mothers were exposed to flame retardants during pregnancy may have a lower IQ than their peers who did not experience prenatal exposure, a new study reports.

A hazardous class of flame retardant chemicals commonly found in furniture and household products damages children’s intelligence, resulting in loss of IQ points, according to a new study (August 2017) by UC San Francisco researchers. They found that every 10 fold increase of maternal flame retardant levels was associated with a drop of 3.7 IQ points in her child

We are exposed to a variety of chemicals each day. It’s nearly impossible to avoid them. If they accumulate in our body then we experience symptoms and eventually diagnosed with some disease. They find their way into the food chain, in particularly high concentration with products that are rich in fats such as fish, meat and milk. They also enter our systems as we breathe particles that have off-gassed from household furnishings.
Picture
In fact, today’s child at 6 years old already has chemical levels that it used to take us until our 40’s to accumulate. There are also strong links between fire retardants and the following conditions:

  • Liver disease
  • Hormonal system and thyroid gland disorders
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Delayed nervous system development in infants
  • Slower brain development, learning delays and lower IQ
  • Increased difficulty of concentration
  • Neurobehavioral disorders
  • Reduction of spermatogenesis
  • Cancer

Accumulation of a lifetime of these toxins combined with others such as heavy metals can result in exhaustion, depression, weight gain, poor motivation, hair loss, and high cholesterol. It doesn’t end there….They can also cause problems; adrenal stress glands, low testosterone, reduced estrogen production, polycystic ovarian syndrome (POS), endometriosis, and cancer. Calcium channels can also blocked leading to high blood pressure, heart failure, and others.

The author Woodruff of the UC San Francisco study stated: “Many people are exposed to high levels of flame retardants (PBDEs) and the more PBDEs a pregnant woman is exposed to, the lower her child’s IQ,” And when the effects of PBDEs are combined with those of other toxic chemicals such as from building products or pesticides, the result is a serious chemical cocktail that our current environmental regulations simply don’t account for.”

The researchers also found some evidence of a link between PDBE exposures and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but concluded that more studies are necessary to better characterize the relationship.

Solution?

If you are planning a pregnancy, reduce the toxic load of your body including heavy metals and other toxins that have accumulated to reduce your baby’s exposure.

Review your current detoxification pathways and check if they are working properly through blood and urine testing.

Sweating is one proven mechanism for dumping stored environmental toxins
Purchase an infrared sauna that uses “poplar wood” only. Call our office for a recommendation. I highly recommend using a sauna after your labs have been completed.

Eliminate trans fatty acids out of the diet, and restore missing essential fats, correct mineral deficiencies, like selenium, manganese, zinc and magnesium to facilitate safe detoxification.

Use cotton mattress covers and room air purifiers to help lower the toxins and avoid the memory foam pillows and beds due to out-gassing.

Breastfeeding May Lower Multiple Sclerosis Risks For Mom

7/29/2017

Picture

In MS, resulting nerve damage disrupts the communication between the brain and the body.

Multiple sclerosis causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. The symptoms, severity, and duration can vary from person to person.

According to a study published in the July 2017, issue of Neurology, mothers who breastfeed for a total of at least 15 months over one or more pregnancies may be less likely to develop multiple sclerosis (MS) compared with those who don’t breastfeed at all or do so for up to four months.

    Dr. Aristotle Economou

Dr. Aristotle understands the difficulties patients go through when dealing with a personal health challenge. In 2006, an event occurred that turned his life upside down and put his years of clinical experience in wellness healthcare to the ultimate test. Over a short period, the muscles in Aristotle’s body unexpectedly became paralyzed with only the ability to slightly move his hands at the wrists and blink his eyes.

Aristotle ended up in an intensive care unit (ICU), followed by a 72-day stay in a local hospital. He was told he may never walk again. Throughout the year, his healing journey continued while confined to an electric wheelchair and requiring around-the-clock care.
With help and determination, Aristotle combined modalities from Functional Medicine, Eastern Medicine and unique techniques in Chiropractic and Tui Na. This resulted in the ability to rebuild his body mind and spirit, which was the foundation to his miraculous recovery including the ability to walk again.

Aristotle then wrote the book, Change the Way You Heal: 7 Steps To Highly Effective Healing. No matter how big or small your health problem, this inspirational book shows you how to maximize your healing abilities and resources using the same methods he implemented in his own recovery.
